The places we love most
Ask ten Aiken folks for their favorite spot and you'll get ten different answers — but these six come up again and again. They're where weekends happen, where visitors get the tour, and where newcomers turn into locals.
Hitchcock Woods
One of the largest urban forests in the country, and it's ours. Seventy miles of sandy trails wind through longleaf pines — you'll share them with horses, happy dogs, and half the town on a Saturday morning.
Fourteen acres of moss-draped live oaks, winding paths, and quiet ponds in the middle of town. Locals walk it at lunch; in December it glows with Christmas lights, hot chocolate, and nightly music.
Laurens Street is our living room: locally owned shops, antiques, coffee, and a brick-paved Alley strung with lights where dinner spills outside on warm nights. If there's a festival, it's probably here.
Laurens St SW · Park once, walk it all
Polo at Whitney Field
Polo has been played in Aiken since the winter-colony days, and Sunday matches at Whitney Field are still the best seat in town: tailgate on the rail, stomp the divots at halftime, stay for the sunset.
Twice a year — spring and fall — the whole town dresses up, packs a tailgate, and watches Thoroughbreds thunder over the jumps. It's part horse race, part homecoming, all Aiken.

Aiken County Farmers Market
The red-roofed market on Williamsburg Street is where Aiken starts its Saturdays: local produce, flowers, baked goods, and the kind of conversations you can't rush. Come hungry, leave with peaches.

I'm an Aiken local first and a Realtor second — that's the order that matters to me. I started Love Aiken because this town is easy to fall for and hard to leave, and I wanted one friendly place that shows why: the trails at sunrise, polo on Sundays, neighbors who wave back.
I'm also a mom to two boys — Davis, 17, and Brooks, 15, both at Horse Creek Academy — and wife to Michael, my best friend and soulmate. Before real estate, my calling was helping people find their voice: I'm an ASHA board-certified speech-language pathologist with 20 years of practice, and I remain deeply passionate about individuals with special needs, about inclusion, and about quietly giving back to the community that has given us so much — no fanfare, just kindness.
One tradition close to our family's heart is the Peace, Love & Ann Marie McGhee 5K, which Michael and I host each year at Horse Creek Academy. It honors the memory of Michael's first wife, Ann Marie — who was also Brooks' fifth-grade teacher and left a lasting mark on his life — and raises money for a yearly scholarship given in her name.
The 2025 Peace, Love & Ann Marie McGhee 5K.
Our crew at Horse Creek Academy last year — runners, students, and neighbors behind the banner, raising scholarship money in Ann Marie's name. This is what community looks like to us.
Yes, I help people buy and sell homes here — with Real Broker here in South Carolina, and as an active member of the Aiken Association of Realtors. Where it all started.
I'm born and raised right here in Aiken, South Carolina — this is where I started. That's me as a little girl with my dad, my mama Sue, and my sister Stephanie. Dad worked at the plant and was a contractor and builder too — he still builds today. Mama worked in the school system while we were in school, and she was a truly beautiful person who loved people and helped everyone she could; I like to think that's where I get a lot of it from. We lost her in 2020, and I carry her with me in everything I do.
Houses have been in my blood from the start.
That's my dad with me and my sister Stephanie — and one little dog tagging along — standing inside the wooden framing of the very first house he ever built. If you wonder where my love of homes comes from, well, it goes back about that far.
The first one was ours.
Me, Davis & Brooks on the porch of the first home I bought all on my own, back in 2016 — a single mom starting over, keys in hand. The house was on Bainbridge Drive in South Meadows, and it's where the three of us lived and made some of our favorite memories. I know exactly what it feels like to stand on a porch like this one — which is why I take it personally when it's your turn.
And then I married my best friend.
Michael and me on our wedding day in Grenada, February 2024. We met in May 2023, and some people just know — he's my soulmate and my best friend, and this chapter of our story is my favorite one yet.
My whole world, in one frame.
The four of us — Michael, me, Davis & Brooks — under the live oaks. For a long time it was just me and my boys against the world; now we're a family of four, and everything I do starts right here.
The four-legged family members.
I am a hopeless animal lover — our house is ruled by two cats and two dogs, and honestly, I'd take in a dozen more if Michael would agree. I'm a big believer in animal rescue, and in spaying and neutering: it's the simplest kindness we can do for the four-legged neighbors who can't speak up for themselves. Until then, these two will keep running the place. The orange tabby strutting toward you is Mr. Whiskers — a stray from the South Meadows woods who decided we were family. When we moved, he found his way back to the old neighborhood and gave us 30 long days of worry before our neighbor Samantha Hanna found him at the old house. These days he's happily retired from adventure: strictly indoors, plus the screened porch.
